Teatro Alebrijes and their new production brings the holidays home/Teatro Alebrijes y su nuevo producción trae las Días festivos a casa.
Over in a corner of a garage that sits in East San José, there’s a ton of food.
Tacos, pizza boxes, onions, cilantro and chíle are ready to feed the hungry actors who sneak over to the blanket-covered washing machine and snag a snack before moving just inches away to rehearse. Actor Carolina Perez sits underneath an incline weight bench, cackling with joy as each comedic performance is singed in the minds of the actors preparing for another holiday theatre production, but with an entirely different flair.
Teatro Alebrijes, a queer Latinx theatre collective, makes theatre that is 100 percent in spanish. This year’s holiday holiday production is entitled “Entre Villancicos y Cuentikos,” which translates to “Of Christmas Carols and Fairy Tales.” The show runs from Dec. 16 – 19 at the Mexican Heritage Plaza in East San José.
One thing that is striking as the artists engage in rehearsal is how much fun they’re having. While actors fluidly enter the scene, others exit to grab something to munch on, help with feeding lines and getting their play to a satisfactory place.
Three of the company’s members shared their thoughts about what this production means to them and their community.
